Following a postseason where the Golden State Warriors showed Sabonis how to nullify him, the Sacramento Kings’ big man has been dubbed the ‘NBA’s most overrated player’.

Sabonis averaged 19.1 points, led the league in rebounding with 12.3 per game, and added 7.3 assists for a surging Sacramento team.

Despite his importance to the Kings’ playoff chances, Sabonis struggled to maintain his impact against unheralded Warriors center Kevon Looney.

A disappointing playoff series against the Golden State Warriors has led Bleacher Report to rank Domantas Sabonis as the NBA’s most overrated player.

A recent article by Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes has listed the top five most overrated NBA players, with Sabonis at the top above Golden State foe Dillon Brooks, Pelicans’ big Jonas Valanciunas, two-time Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard, and Chicago Bulls’ veteran DeMar DeRozan.

For a Kings team that is now concerned with winning the playoffs, those limitations are important. Hughes wrote that Sabonis will struggle to be a factor in Sacramento’s playoff games if he cannot shore up his specific and obvious exploitable weaknesses. “The Warriors provided the book on how to marginalize Sabonis, and future opponents will have read it carefully.”

During Golden State’s 4-3 series win over the Kings, Sabonis’ numbers dropped to 16.4 points, 11 rebounds, and 4.7 assists.

As part of his over 15 boards per game, Looney averaged 5.3 offensive rebounds, while Sabonis produced a -7.0 plus-minus.

During the seven-game series, Golden State completely shut down Sabonis’ offensive output, paying little attention to his jumpshot, which dropped from 61.5% to under 50%.

After the incident, Sabonis’ perspective shifted incredibly, and the pressure on him after signing a five-year, $217 million contract with the Kings earlier this month will only intensify.

DeMar DeRozan And Kawhi Leonard Named In The List Of The Most Overrated NBA Players

NBA overrated players include DeMar DeRozan and Kawhi Leonard

Leonard’s health and DeRozan’s three-point shooting were major factors in the decision

Another big name on the list was Dillon Brooks

The NBA’s most overrated players include DeMar DeRozan and Kawhi Leonard.

Additionally, Grant Hughes named Domantas Sabonis, Dillon Brooks, and Jonas Valanciunas as players who are valued too highly in the modern league in his Bleacher Report column.

“He was easy to include on our list because DeRozan’s individual bucket-getting prowess has led to precious little team success and comes with a level of defensive ineptitude that effectively cancels out (at best) the value he provides as a scorer,” Hughes wrote of the Chicago Bulls star.

In regards to Leonard, he said his health was a major concern, and while he is a force on the court, he misses a large chunk of games, overshadowing his skills.

Then Hughes writes, “Valanciunas is tough and he competes, but his best skills don’t drive winning. And his shortcomings can lower his team’s chance of winning.”

The common factor for Brooks and Sabonis is their failure to reach the postseason, which is detrimental to their respective teams’ chances.

Will DeMar DeRozan And Kawhi Leonard Find Success Next Season?

DeMar DeRozan and Kawhi Leonard are the two biggest names in BR’s feature, so all eyes will be on them next year.

In the Bulls’ case, it will be about making a deeper playoff run along with Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic (if he does not get traded). When the Clippers indeed add Kawhi, he will have to make a difference to Paul George, Russell Westbrook, and possibly James Harden.

Additionally, it will be interesting to see how Brooks does with his new team following his murky departure from the Memphis Grizzlies.
