Buffalo Bills NFL Army Ugly Sweater
After a heartbreaking finish to last season that ended on the wrong side of an overtime coin flip, the Buffalo Bills enter the 2022 NFL season as the betting favorites to win the Super Bowl.
Postseason shortcomings are nothing new in the franchise history of the reigning AFC East champions. However, expectations are higher than ever now that upstate New York boasts its deepest collection of professional football talent in recent memory.
Josh Allen underperformed in the eyes of some critics a season ago but still led the Bills to victory in their final four games of the schedule before finishing out the postseason by setting the NFL record for playoff passer rating. Allen is now the favorite to win NFL MVP, and with most of his significant help returning on offense, the scoring figures to remain high for a team that recorded at least 26 points in all but four games a season ago.
The Bills offseason was not without significant changes, however. Last year’s offensive coordinator Bill Daboll is now head coach of the New York Giants, while Buffalo also welcomed six new defensive staff members as well as a new strength and conditioning coach. The most significant player departure came with the release of veteran slot receiver Cole Beasley in March.
Fortunately, the Bills reloaded in several key areas while reinforcing their already elite defense. The acquisition of eight-time pro bowler Von Miller will see the former Super Bowl MVP make his third run at a championship after winning his latest title last season with the Los Angeles Rams.
The Bills additionally brought in former first-round pick O.J. Howard to improve the offense’s ability to execute two-tight end formations and also added running back depth through the draft and free agency with James Cook and Duke Johnson, respectively. Former quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey will replace Daboll as the new offensive coordinator and play-caller.
Could this finally be the year Buffalo exorcises its playoff demons and ghosts of past Super Bowls? Even if betting to win it all can be risky, there are still plenty of intriguing wagers to be made on the Bills. Here are some of the best value bets and props for the upcoming Buffalo Bills regular season performance, with all odds courtesy of Caesars Sportsbook.
Best Win Total Bet · Regular Season Wins: Under 11.5 (+120)As complete as the Bills figure to be this season, their schedule forecasts as one of the most difficult across the NFL. There are nine road games, and five of Buffalo’s first seven matchups will feature opponents that made the postseason a year ago — the other two being away games in Baltimore and Miami. The Bills went 2-4 against eventual playoff teams in last year’s regular season, splitting their divisional home-and-home with New England (they did defeat the team that ultimately kept them from reaching the conference championship game, Kansas City).
It is reasonable to project Buffalo will have at least three losses on their record before November. From there, the road to the postseason becomes considerably easier, but it will not come without challenges. The Bills travel to Detroit for the first game of Thanksgiving day, followed by another Thursday road meeting in a key divisional matchup with the Patriots. Buffalo will also travel to Cincinnati for Monday Night Football in the penultimate week of the schedule before hosting New England in their final regular-season game.
The Bills have only swept the Patriots once since 1994. Another split with New England and a defeat to last year’s AFC champion Cincinnati would give Buffalo a minimum of five losses. One additional blemish anywhere else across the regular season would secure a win total below 11.5 games.
Best Player Props · Josh Allen Total Rushing Yards: Over 550.5 (-115)Allen surpassed the line for this prop twice in his first four NFL seasons, including the most recent and his rookie campaign. He has started every game the past three years, and had Allen played an additional game in 2019 consistent with the current schedule’s allotment, he would have been less than 10 yards away from eclipsing the line a third time.
Only seven times in Allen’s tenure has he failed to obtain a double-digit rushing total in a regular season contest. His career average of just over 38 rushing yards per game would suggest across an average 17-game schedule, Allen should obtain a rushing total of roughly 648 yards. Even if Allen ends up missing two games in 2022, a standard performance will still position him to reach at least 551 yards on the ground.

Josh Allen Total Rushing Touchdowns: Over 6.5 (-115)Last season was the only in Allen’s career so far that did not see him score at least seven rushing touchdowns. He still managed to obtain six, and Allen’s career total of 31 remains 10 more than any other NFL quarterback since he entered the league in 2018.
Allen averages roughly half a rushing touchdown per game in his career, or put another way, one every other week. That translates to a total of just over 8.5 scores on the ground in an average season. Even if he misses three games in 2022, he will still have a better than average likelihood of surpassing the line for this prop.
Stefon Diggs Total Receiving Yards: Under 1,225.5 (-110)The line for this prop holds an interesting total given the number serves as only half a yard more than what Diggs recorded last season in his second year with the Bills. Diggs has posted four straight NFL campaigns with at least 1,000 receiving yards, but only in his first season with Buffalo did he obtain the total required for this prop’s over to cash.
Diggs led the NFL in receptions two seasons ago, recording 1,535 receiving yards along the way. The other two years of his career in which he caught at least 100 passes saw him average just 1,123 yards. Diggs currently boasts the third-lowest odds to lead the NFL in receptions but finished tied for ninth in 2021 despite finishing fifth in targets and scoring a career-best 10 receiving touchdowns.
Even with the departure of Beasley, Diggs figures to have more competition for production this season than in either of his previous efforts with the Bills. Gabriel Davis and Dawson Knox are both coming off career highs in targets, while the offense will look to fill the void left by Beasley through potential replacements in Isaiah McKenzie and incoming slot veteran Jamison Crowder. Secondary tight end O.J. Howard and fifth-round draft pick Khalil Shakir out of Boise State also factor in as additional options to help Allen spread the ball around.
Best Bet for Player Awards · Regular Season MVP: Josh Allen (+700)Allen is the favorite to win the NFL’s highest individual achievement. It’s surprising that Allen’s greatest distinction through four professional campaigns is a second-team All-Pro honor after scoring 88 total touchdowns across the previous two years. His Pro Bowl snub last season in favor of Lamar Jackson was the subject of widespread controversy, and it seems fair to wonder if the lack of acknowledgement put a chip on Allen’s shoulder considering he ultimately declined an invite after Jackson pulled out.
In over a third of all the Bills’ games last season, Allen served as the team’s leading passer and rusher. Buffalo’s new offensive coordinator is also acting as a lead play-caller for the first time in the NFL. Given the incoming adjustment, one can infer Dorsey — Allen’s quarterback coach of the last three seasons — will lean on the player he is most accustomed to dealing with for the bulk of the team’s offensive production.
Allen reached a career high in rushing yards a year ago, was less than 140 passing yards away from a new season-best and set the record for best passer rating in a single postseason in NFL history despite the Bills losing in the divisional round. He has all the momentum, surrounding talent and production opportunity to put together his best effort yet on the path to an MVP trophy.
