The Chicago State Cougars are one of the newest NCAA Division I programs in the United States. Founded in 1915, they have only been a full-time operation since 1957. The Cougars have competed in the Missouri Valley Conference since 1973 and have had moderate success over the years. However, they are now members of the American Athletic Conference (AAC) after being accepted as an associate member in 2013. Chicago State underwent some renovations prior to their first season in the AAC, including a new on-campus basketball arena that was officially opened on September 25th of this year. The Cougars were originally slated to play their home games at Olivet Nazarene University but changed venues due to budget cuts and difficulties getting permits from Olivet Nazarene for games that would be televised. Chicago State’s team colors are gold and green, which were chosen in honor of two former head coaches, Everett Case (1957-1973) and Floyd Lawrence (1973-1977). Their primary logo is that of a Hibiscus flower with three white petals extending outward. Their secondary logo includes a palm tree within an outlined HUBCAP design with “CSU” below it in gold lettering. In addition to sporting apparel, Chicago State players wear socks depicting various US states as well as specific cities within those states including California, Illinois, Louisiana and Texas.
