Preston North End are a football club based in Preston, Lancashire. They play in the Football League One (Northern Ireland), where they have been since 1907. The team’s nickname is the Lilywhites, after the white lilies of Lancashire which are widely found in the county. The club has a long-standing association with the manufacture of shoes and boots, and it was founded in 1875 as St Paul’s Rovers. In 1877–78, Daniel Sanderson, a boot maker from Preston, formed a football team called Preston North End and played its first ever game against Wigan Town. He took on several players from other local teams and for his first season he managed to win the Lancashire Cup. In 1879 Preston North End merged with another side, called Blackpool F.C., and played their first ever game as Preston North End FC. The following year they entered into an agreement with Whittingham & Co., one of England’s leading boot makers, to become their Official Shoe Dealers. In 1895 the club changed their name to Manchester United because rivals Manchester City had already claimed that name. However, after three years under this name United re-established themselves as Preston North End FC and remained so until 1907 when they were elected to Division One of the Football League.
