Sunderland Football Club, also known as Sunderland AFC, is a professional football club based in the city of Sunderland in North East England. The club has been nicknamed “The Black Cats” due to their all-black home and away kits. The club played its first ever game in 1879 and participated in the Football League from its establishment in 1888 until 2000, when they were relegated to the Conference League. After two seasons spent in the Conference League, they returned to the Football League Championship in 2003 but were relegated again at the end of their second season. From 1982−83 to 1988−89 they wore a plain red and white strip, followed by a green and white strip from 1990−91 to 1992−93 before reverting back to black during 1993−94 as part of Nike’s “Write Your Own Sticker” campaign sponsored by Nokia.
