How to make an ugly Christmas sweater for the holidays!
If you’re looking for an easy and fun way to spruce up your holiday outfit, consider making an ugly Christmas sweater! You can find a variety of sweaters online or at your local retail store. The key is to pick something that you love but doesn’t typically wear. For this tutorial, we’ve chosen a festive red and green Christmas sweater designed by Etsy seller LovelyFashionista.
To make the sweater, follow these simple steps:
1. Start by cutting the knitting fabric into a size that will fit you well (ours was size Medium). You’ll also need some scrap yarns in different colors to match your sweater (we used pink, green and red). Note: If you are using a non-knitting fabric, be sure to measure how much yardage you will need before starting your project.
2. Next, begin sewing the seams of the knitting fabric together along the top edge with a straight stitch. Weave in any loose ends as you go. Make sure that your seam is even all around; if it isn’t, use a seam ripper or needle nose pliers to fix it before continuing. Do not sew through the scrap yarns yet!
3. Sew each scrap yarn piece onto one side of the main knitting fabric piece so that they form fringe on both sides (see photo). Weave in any loose ends as you go (again, make
The History of the Ugly Christmas Sweater
The ugly Christmas sweater is often thought of as a tradition that dates back to the 1970s, but the history of the ugly Christmas sweater stretches back much further. In fact, it can be traced all the way back to 1922.
That year, a department store in Philadelphia called Carson’s began selling an extra-large version of its popular coat called the “Big Boy”. The coat was decorated with large snowflakes and was meant for men who were taller than most other people. However, because women weren’t allowed to wear coats in most department stores at the time, women started buying them in bulk and giving them away as holiday presents.
People soon began calling these coats “ugly Christmas sweaters” and the tradition of dressing up like a snowman ornaments to go outside on Christmas Day began. In 1969, Richard O’Brien, the actor who played Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the original Broadway production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, started wearing an ugly Christmas sweater onstage during performances. This led to other cast members starting wearing them and eventually everyone on stage was decked out in one.
Today, there are countless versions of the ugly Christmas sweater available online and in stores across the country. Whether you go for a traditional red and green sweater or something more outrageous like a giant inflatable rat head sweater, there’s sure to be something that fits your personality perfectly!
How to wear an Ugly Christmas Sweater
If you’re looking for a way to show off your holiday decorum and offend everyone in the room at the same time, check out our guide on how to wear an ugly Christmas sweater.
To start, find a Christmas sweater that you absolutely despise. It doesn’t have to be ugly per se – just dowdy and outdated. Alternatively, if you have a festive outfit that you know is too pretty for this season, go with something from the uglier side of the spectrum: a ratty old cardigan, ripped jeans, or even suspenders.
Once you’ve chosen your outfit, it’s time to get your makeup ready! If you’re going for an eyeless zombie look, start by concealing any blemishes with foundation and powder. Next, use a thick brush to apply brown eye shadow in an uneven line above your lids; add a touch of white eyeliner for added character. For lips, choose either a red or burgundy lipstick – both will complement the dreary color scheme of your sweater perfectly. Finally, add some dark liner around your eyes to create an eerie effect.
Now all you need is some festive accessories to really complete the look: mismatched socks (or adult ones if you don’t have any kids’!), bells, and creepy fake fruit. And there you have it – an Ugly Christmas Sweater that will make everyone at the party recoil in horror!
How to make the sweater
This is a step-by-step guide on how to make the ugly Christmas sweater. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart, but it’s so worth it in the end.
1. Start by sewing together two rectangles of fabric that are about 18 inches wide and 26 inches long. You will also need to sew a 4-inch hole in one corner of each piece so that you can tie it together later on.
2. Assemble your stuffing(s). For this sweater, we used foam balls and cotton balls. We stuffed each ball half full (or as much as we could) and then sewed them up into the corners of the fabric pieces. Make sure that there are no gaps or pockets between the stuffing and the fabric!
3. Now it’s time to decorate! Cut some strips of fabric about 2 inches wide and 20 inches long, and sew them onto one side of each piece of your sweater front. Pin them in place, and then zigzag stitch them down the middle so that they form a patterned border. We chose to use goldenrod for our stripes, but any color would work great!
4. Next, cut out a smiley face using a circle template or an embroidery hoop and some white cotton batting/foam padding textile glue (this stuff is amazing!). Glue it onto one side of your striped fabric piece where you cut it out earlier, making sure that its centered

For this ugly Christmas sweater, you will need:
-worsted weight yarn in black, green, and brown
-stitch marker
-yarn needle

Instructions:
1. Begin by knitting the body of your sweater using the black yarn. Start at the bottom of the back and work your way up to the top of the front. Steps to make the sweater
If you’re looking to up your ugly Christmas sweater game this year, follow these easy steps!
1. Get your supplies ready: You’ll need a sweater, some fuzzy fabric, and a hot glue gun.
2. Cut out the sweater’s front and back pieces. Be sure to cut out enough material so that there’s a generous overlap at the shoulders.
3. Glue the front and back pieces together along the seams, making sure to leave plenty of extra fabric so that you can seam it up the sides later on. Allow to dry completely before proceeding.
4. Cut out some fluffy fabric to use as an underlayer. It should be big enough so that it covers most of the stitches on your sweater, but not so big that it covers up the sides or bottom of the sweater. Glue this piece onto the top of your underlayer, making sure to smooth everything out so there are no wrinkles or bumps. Allow both layers to dry completely before proceeding.
5. Now it’s time for fun! With your hot glue gun in hand, attach random bits of fuzzy fabric all over your sweater (try not to go overboard). This will give it a christmasy look and feel!
Tips for wearing the Ugly Christmas Sweater

1) Choose a sweater that is comfortable and fits well. You want to be able to move around while wearing it and not feel constricted.

3) Make sure that your accessories complement the sweater. For example, if you’re wearing a festive wig, don’t wear too much eye makeup or lipstick to overpower it. Likewise, avoid putting too much make-up on your face if you’re wearing a beard or mustache; go for a light touch instead.
4) Be creative! There are endless ways to wear an ugly Christmas sweater. Whether you go for something traditional such as a scarf or hat, or try something more daring like a see-through shirt or lingerie set, there’s bound to be an option that will suit your fancy!
